EP 001 | Why? Oh why?!

So I decided to do a podcast... I know, I'm not the first :) This is a little explanation as to why.

It's far better to do 5 or 10 minutes a day than an hour a week. It's far better to break large complex tasks or goals into bite-size chunks and do them with regularity and consistency everyday rather than wait until you can blitz it in one go. If you want to improve your craft at something you need to be doing it everyday not just every so often. And if you want to get to the goal it's better to make small progress every day rather than large progress every so often. Baby steps and chipping away at something everyday and the routes to achievement.
If you are reliant on a third party for your livelihood, then consider ways that you can change that; what if overnight they changed their rules and you lose your access to them how would that affect your business or your livelihood? Perhaps you are an employee who got made redundant, perhaps you were reliant on Facebook and they change their API access and your business no longer has access to the data it needs to function, perhaps you relied on MySpace and it just died on you! If you rely on some other company for your livelihood, at some point, they can change that relationship and you can be left stranded. So, if you can avoid it, don't build your house on somebody else's land.
What have you not started yet because you're overcomplicating it in your mind? What are you doing that is being dragged down by overcomplicating? How would simplifying elements of your life, your work, your planning, your everything, make it easier to move closer to where you want to be? Isn't it time to simplify your life?
Think about your average day when you've succeeded in your goal or reached your dream. What does it look like? What do you do in the morning, the afternoon, the evening? Get specific! Now, how can you bring, and start integrating, some of those elements into your day to day life right now? I'm short, if it's your dream, or you're waiting until something like retirement to do the things you've always wanted to do, why not start them right now; what's stopping you?
What's the purpose of your goal? If it is to positively affect people - whether through a business product or service, through art, charity, etc - then, if you were to consider what you do valid and worthwhile consider, "How many people is enough?". How many people do you need to affect for it to be worth it?
You never know when the payoff is going to come...so don't focus on it. Instead, invest in that "thing" (relationships, health, your creative passion, etc) because you love it and because you believe in it. Don't let a "lack of progress" deter you; persevere. Because you never know when the payoff is going to come!
Changing your location, your movement and your sensory input are great ways to be out of your usual, comfortable zone, and can be greatly beneficial for you. Even just changing the route you normally take to get somewhere can help improve your mood, focus and creativity. Moving out of your comfort zone isn't just about the work and skills you're doing, it's your physical location too.
Fallen out of the habit of doing something? Been meaning to start something you've just not gotten around to yet? The past is not the future, nor do you have to wait for a special day to (re)start doing something - resolutions don't need to wait for January 1st; instead, tomorrow can be Day One.
Whether in relationships, in business, in the creative arts, in simply indulging a passion or hobby, don't focus on being the best - and don't let fear of not being the best stop you from starting - instead focus on being someone's favourite. And the great thing is, your uniqueness, your unique personality, viewpoint and experience is precisely what will make you somebody's favourite.
Where does new art come from? What drives creativity? Is it the "muse" or is it just hard graft? That was the question put to me about my new album, and my music in general, and this episode seeks to answer it. But, in short; it's a bit of both :)
This is a marketing-focused episode today so, if it's not your bag, feel free to skip it! If it IS your thing, then you may find it interesting: The important thing to get across is your message, not the wrapper, or medium, that carries it.
If you've not already gotten into them I urge you to delve into the plethora of podcasts out there and find the ones that really resonate with you. There is SO much knowledge and experience out there waiting to help you grow as a person, and it's all for free. All you've got to do is seek them out and hit play. Here I'll give you my top suggestions of where to start.
This episode is a message of thanks to all of you. To everyone who has supported me in whatever capacity. And it's a reminder for us all, to say thank you to those people who support and inspire us in our lives, from family and friends to those we've never met in person. If someone inspires and motivates you to do better, to be better, then share the love, let that person/those people know how much you appreciate it :)
Unless it affects someone's health (including your own!) nothing is permanent, it can be changed over time. So take action on your goal, no matter what that is. Even if the results aren't perfect at first, you can always course correct as you go. But you must take action first, or you've no course to correct.
Owning your own corner of the online world, where you can share your thoughts, experience and creativity, gives you both a way for personal growth and the possibility to increase your value in "the marketplace", whatever marketplace means to you. That's why I think everyone should have their own website!
Thanks to Jaime Hudson for this question! I got so passionate in answering this question and talking about music that I might have overrun my usual timings... But what the hell, I'm talking about MUSIC! BOOYA! :)
